cosplay super-hero ‘CAUSEplayers’ to take on the fight for childhood cancer research

We’re delighted to announce Colorado Springs’ first-ever cosplay for a cause or “CAUSE-play” collaboration to raise funding for childhood cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. ‘Cosplay’ is the intersection of ‘costume design’ and ‘play’ as a type of performance art. CAUSEplay team members will join us, GalaxyFest, and Back East Bar and Grill in their super-hero costumes to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation during the March 11, 2017 St. Patrick’s Day Parade downtown.

“This is the first ‘CAUSEplay’ charitable fundraising event of its type in the region,” said our marketing director Becca Sickbert. “At elope, our St. Baldrick’s planning team has dreamed of combining two things we believe in: raising money to fund research for vastly underfunded children’s cancers, and the art of cosplay as joyful self-expression. We’re ecstatic that with the help of GalaxyFest, and our local cosplay community, it’s finally happening!”

The Colorado Springs community has raised over $1.5 million for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation over the past 16 years. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $101 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. Only four percent of all federal cancer research funding is dedicated to pediatric cancer research.

“elope raised almost $50,000 last year for St. Baldrick’s,” said Sickbert. “This year, with our Back East Bar and GalalxyFest partnerships, we’re aiming to raise at least $65,000 with the added bonus of recruiting costumed super-heroes to the cause.”

Local cosplayers can join the ‘CAUSEplay’ team through March 10 at stbaldricks.org/teams/GalaxyFestCAUSEplayers as a ‘volunteer’ and still parade with the team downtown in any super-hero costume they choose. Head-shaving is not required and online registration is free.

The GalaxyFest and elope CAUSEplay march is a combined effort to promote both the growing cosplay community of the Pikes Peak Region, and the upcoming Colorado Springs St. Baldrick’s Community Head-Shaving Event at Back East Bar at 9475 Briar Village Pt, Colorado Springs, from 10am-6pm on March 12, 2017. More information on the 16th  Annual Colorado Springs Community Event is available at stbaldricks.org/events/COSprings.
